Just thinking about how to organize your closet could make you feel overwhelmed. That’s why we have come up with 5 thorough steps to guide you while you clean out your closet.
Have you been closing the door to your closet so you don’t have to stare at the mess? Walking by and wincing at the clothes all over the place? Now came the dreaded time to finally clean out that closet!
It’s not easy to have motivation for that. What if we said it only takes 5 steps from start to finish? Doesn’t seem real, but it is!
Here are the easiest steps to guide you along while you finally organize your closet! *These steps are for a small reach-in closet with no system but could apply for a walk-in closet*
This post is all about how to organize your closet in 5 steps!
How To Organize Your Closet In 5 Steps
STEP 1 TAKE EVERYTHING OUT
Yes, you heard that right. Take all those clothes on the floor, the top shelf, and the clothes on the hangers and put everything on the bed so you can easily see everything. Your closet should be empty!
Having an empty cleaned-out place to start with, will help you see your progress as clean.
STEP 2 MAKE A KEEP AND DONATE PILE
Divide your clothes and anything else there might be (shoes, hats, belts, etc.) into a pile of what you wear pretty often and a pile of which you haven’t worn in about a year ( this doesn’t include the fancy items kept for special occasions).
Put the items you don’t wear much into a bag to drop off at a donation center!
STEP 3 MAKE ANOTHER PILE OF FOLD OR HANG
After putting aside what you no longer wear, make two more piles. One pile should consist of clothes you will hang up and the other that will be on a shelf.
Your closet should still be empty and you should have a set of folded clothes ready to be put away. (unless you are hanging everything up)
STEP 4 HANG UP ALL THE CLOTHES/ PUT FOLDED ON THE SHELF
Now you can start filling up your closet again. set the folded clothes into the top shelf, and hang up the remaining clothes.
At this point, your closet should have clothes that are hung up and clothes that are on the shelf.
You might still have accessories (things like hats, scarves, belts, etc) and more bulky items (like sweaters) still out. On to the next step to figure out where they go!
STEP 5 USE BASKETS FOR BULKY ITEMS & ACCESSORIES
This might be something you will have to buy if you don’t have them around your house!
One or two giant baskets should go on the floor of your closet and a few smaller ones should go on the shelf above the hang bar.
If you have bulky sweaters that just won’t stay on the hanger and won’t stay folded, the baskets are amazing for them!
Hats, Belts, and any smaller items should go in the baskets on the shelf!
After following these 5 steps your closet should look neater and a lot less cluttered! Take one step at a time to stay on track and not feel overwhelmed.
