How To Tidy Up Your Home In 5 Easy Steps
10 things used to keep your house clean
- 30 minutes (or quicker depending on you!)
- Broom
- Vacuum
- Baskets
- Trash Bags
- Dust rag
- Wet rag
- Sponge
- Window Cleaner
- Air freshener
Step 1 How To Keep Your House Clean and Organized
Find What Doesn’t Belong!
You might think this is obvious and a little silly to mention, but hear us out. We will start with your living room as an example. We’re assuming that everything in there has a place.
There’s a couch with a couple of pillows and a coffee table. A dresser. Maybe a chair. A couple of plants (obviously) etc.
Now scan this place and see what doesn’t belong here? Toys. Shoes. Blankets from upstairs. Coffee mug. Some mail that someone dropped on the floor. Maybe some cereal that made it from the kitchen.
Look at your living room again, and now you can vividly see all the things that shouldn’t be there. This method will help you pick everything up so much quicker.
Step 2 HAVE A COUPLE BASKETS AROUND YOUR HOME
Let’s say you have your friends coming over in about 15 min and you just scanned your home. You have no idea where to start or how you will get all the stuff back to their places.
Well, if you have a couple of woven baskets (they fit right in with pretty much any decor and are so useful. check out our 5 Easy Steps For Re-Organizing Your Closet) you can put all the toys in one and unneeded blankets in the next one. Maybe paperwork to look through in another and so on.
Have two in your living room or kitchen on hand for a quick clean-up.
Step 3 VACUUM/SWEEP
After everything that doesn’t belong is up, do a quick clean-up of the floor. Vacuuming or sweeping doesn’t take long, but it makes a big difference when all the crumbs are off the floor.
This step works best if you have a cordless vacuum and we’re NOT just saying that. It could seem that you don’t have the time to take out your vacuum and it’s too much of a hassle, but if you have a cordless vacuum, just taking it out does not even take 5 minutes.
So vacuum up your carpets and even vacuum up your kitchen floors because this cordless vacuum that we are linking is amazing and works great on any type of floor! (p.s. we use it too!)
Tip; having a cordless vacuum will save you a tremendous amount of time (we’re linking the one we currently use at the end of the post!) * it’s affordable*
Step 4 CLEAN OFF THE COUNTERTOPS/TABLE
If you only have 10 minutes to tidy up, you probably don’t have time to wash the dishes (or load up the dishwasher) so focus on just taking everything off the table and countertops. That already makes your kitchen look cleaner.
Here are the three things you need to get rid of ASAP:
- Trash
- Dirty Dishes
- Food
After cleaning these three things off your countertops and table, they are probably 95% cleaned off. Anything else that doesn’t belong, get rid of it, wipe down the space, and there you go! (This step might take the longest amount of time, but it’s worth it!)
Worry about the dishes later if you’re exhausted or don’t have time. (we’re not very keen on leaving the dishes overnight or for later, but sometimes it’s okay!)
Step 5 TAKE OUT THE TRASH
Make sure the trash in your bathroom and kitchen isn’t overflowing. It only takes about 5 minutes to do, but it gets rid of any nasty smell and makes the space much cleaner.
If needed, take out the trash from your kitchen, bathroom, and where ever else that holds a trash bin.
Make a habit of taking out your trash at the end of each day to avoid overfilling your trash bins.
Taking out the trash takes away any nasty smell and gives the room a cleaner look.
Tip; Make sure to take out the trash at the end of each day to avoid overfilling trash bins
Recap
- Start with removing items that don’t belong
- Use baskets for a quick pick up
- Vacuum/sweep floors
- Clean off countertops/table
- Take out trash
- Wash dishes (if enough time)
Now, remember, this is just a fast, easy clean-up if you’re running out of time or if you’re exhausted! (this might have taken you around 30 minutes)
A quick tidy-up like this, might not make the place sparkling clean, but if you’re tired or only have so much time, then these steps are perfect and will change your clean-up game.
