1) Buy Meat and Eggs from Local Farms

Buying meat and eggs from local farms provides you with fresh, high-quality products that you would get with your own animals! Look for farmer’s markets in your area for fresh meat and eggs!

2) Buy Raw Milk Locally and Make Your Own Dairy Products

Raw milk is full of nutrients and enzymes that are beneficial to your health. Look for local raw milk sources, and use them to make your own dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and butter. This way, you know exactly what ingredients are in your food, and you can avoid harmful additives.

3) Make Your Own Brown Sugar

By making your own brown sugar, you can control the quality of ingredients and the sweetness level. Mix one tablespoon of molasses for every white sugar cup to create your own brown sugar.

4) Grow a Garden

Growing your own garden is one of the core principles of urban homesteading. It is an excellent way to provide fresh produce for your family and enjoy the benefits of being outside. Even if you only have a small space, there are many ways to grow your own food, such as container gardening, vertical gardening, and hydroponics.

5) Preserve food

Canning, dehydrating, and freezing are all great ways to preserve fresh produce for later use. Not only does this help reduce food waste and save you money, but it also allows you to enjoy your garden harvest all year round. Learn the basics of canning, including how to sterilize jars, use a pressure canner, and follow safety guidelines.

6) Learn to Make Your Own Bread

Making your own bread is an essential skill for any urban homesteader. Not only is it healthier, but it is also more cost-effective than buying bread from the store. Invest in a good quality bread maker or learn to make bread by hand.

7) Practice Composting

Composting helps reduce waste and creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Even if you live in an apartment, there are many ways to compost, such as using a worm bin or bokashi composting.

8) Raise Chickens

This one is a bit tricky because not all neighborhoods allow chickens but if they do and you have the space, consider raising chickens for their eggs and meat. Chickens are easy to care for and provide a sustainable source of protein for your family. Check with your local government for regulations on backyard chicken keeping. If you are not able to then going with tip number one is your best choice!!
