1) Start small

Don’t try to tackle a huge garden all at once. Start with a small bed or container, and work your way up!

2) Choose the right plants

Not all plants are suitable for all climates or soil types. Do some research to find out which plants will thrive in your area.

3) Improve your soil

Healthy soil is the foundation of a healthy garden. Add organic matter, such as compost, to improve the fertility and structure of your soil.

4) Water Correctly

Overwatering or underwatering can both be harmful to plants. Learn how to properly water your plants, and avoid getting water on the leaves.

5) Get the right tools

Invest in a good set of gardening tools, such as gloves, a trowel, and a watering can! (check out: gardening tools for beginners)

6) Fertilize

Plants need nutrients to grow. Use fertilizer according to the instructions on the package, or consider using organic methods such as compost or vermicomposting.

7) Prune

Regular pruning is essential to the health of most plants. It encourages new growth and can help to prevent disease.

8) Keep an eye out for pests

Garden pests can quickly destroy a plant. Learn to recognize common pests and take action to protect your plants.

9) Rotate your crops

Rotating your crops can help to prevent disease and pests, and can also improve soil fertility.

10) Have patience

Gardening takes time and patience. Don’t expect instant results and enjoy growing your own plants.
