It is quite normal to be a little lost when it comes to deciding how you’ll be decorating your home.
Most likely you just want to go shopping for everything all at once and decorate it all in one evening. All though it’s not THAT easy, it still is pretty simple.
I have put together a little list of dos and don’ts that’ll help you out and take away all that stress. (Or maybe you’re not stressed out just looking for some tips I’m here for that too!)
This post is all about the best decorating tips for beginners!
Best Decorating Tips For Beginners
*This is not professional advice*
The DON’TS
~ DON’T Put Your Couches Against The Wall
Maybe you have never thought about this one at all. But putting your couch close up to the wall goes against all the decorating rules!
This is crucial!! Putting your couch against the wall just makes it seem like everything is moved away for a certain event in the middle of the room and it is NOT the look we are trying to achieve!
Use this tip for couches; Leave about 6 inches between the back of the couch and the wall.
~ DON’T Buy Things Just Because They’re On Sale
Just because you are shopping and you see a random coffee table on sale it DOESN’T mean you should purchase it!
Sure, if it is a good quality table and it fits the style you’re going for that absolutely go for it!
But if you are buying just because it could catch up with you in the long run when you realize it’s not what you wanted after all!
~ DON’T Over Use Plants
I am a huge sucker for plants. Plants in the house are very important to me. But I did learn that there is such a thing as too many plants!
(unless the style you are going for goes along with that)
What I learned, is that sometimes having too many plants in one area will provide a cluttered, messy feel to it.
If you are a plant lover like me, make sure to spread them all around your home, not just in one area.
~ DON’T Over Use Art
You don’t have to hang up every art piece you own.
Hanging up art pieces randomly throughout the home just to cover up more space will just leave the room feeling cluttered.
Only hang up pieces that bring you joy and go with the rest of the furniture and decor of your home.
~ DON’T Go Overboard With Tabletop Decor Pieces
Yes, decor pieces are important but remember not to over-clutter your furniture with all the decor pieces you can find.
It will clutter up your space instead of bringing out your style.
The DO’S
~ DO Take Your Time Picking Out Furniture
Even if you’re in a rush and all you want is your home to be filled up, take your time picking out furniture or decor.
This way you know for 100% that whatever you choose will last you a while because you truly appreciate the piece!
Don’t worry if it will take you more than a few months before everything is complete! It’ll be worth it!
~ DO Coordinate Colors
Be attentive to the colors you are choosing for your home. Your home will be the place you spend time the most.
Make sure the colors that are going into your space, coordinate all together.
You don’t have to stick to one color only to match, just make sure the color of your couch goes well with the color of your rug or curtains.
This will make sure to provide a soothing, relaxing environment.
~ DO Match Your Couch To Your Furniture
Matching your couch to the rest of the furniture will help bring the room together.
You can match them either by style or maybe match the color of the couch legs to the color of the other pieces.
~DO Use White Bedding
Using white bed sheets will give the bed a more calming and inviting look as well as an elegant one.
This is especially important if you have a guest room and want them to feel as welcomed and relaxed as possible.
(White bed sheets also give off a clean hotel room and who doesn’t like that!)
~ DO Keep It Simple
You don’t have to feel the need to fill up every corner of your space. Just enough to make it cozy and yours.
Sometimes we tend to get a little carried away and end up buying items we don’t need.
This will just add to your to-do list to declutter and get rid of unnecessary things.
So when decorating, remember to keep it simple!
